The Girard Housing Authority (GHA) is committed to providing safe, decent, and affordable housing opportunities for elderly individuals and persons with disabilities within the Girard community.

Through the Public Housing Program, GHA operates Water Street Apartments, a community designed to promote independent living, stability, dignity, and quality of life for eligible residents.

Our mission is to provide affordable housing in a respectful, professional, and welcoming environment while ensuring compliance with all U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) regulations.

We strive to support residents by offering housing that encourages independence, community involvement, and a safe place to call home.

Water Street Apartments

Girard Housing Authority manages Water Street Apartments, a 24-unit Public Housing community located in Girard, Kansas.

Water Street Apartments is designed to serve eligible elderly individuals and persons with disabilities who are seeking affordable, comfortable, and professionally managed housing.

Each apartment features:

• 1 Bedroom
• 1 Bathroom
• Approximately 576 Square Feet
• Single-Level Living
• Affordable Public Housing
• Professionally Managed Community

Water Street Apartments provides a quiet residential setting where residents can maintain their independence while enjoying a supportive community atmosphere.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

Housing assistance is available to applicants who meet HUD and Girard Housing Authority eligibility requirements.

Eligibility is generally based on:

• Income limits established by HUD
• Elderly or disabled household status
• Citizenship or eligible immigration status
• Criminal background screening
• Previous rental history
• Compliance with HUD program requirements

Income limits are established annually by HUD and may change from year to year.

Meeting eligibility requirements does not guarantee immediate housing availability. Qualified applicants may be placed on a waiting list when all units are occupied.

Interested individuals may apply for housing assistance by completing an application and submitting all required documentation.

Once your application is received, Girard Housing Authority will review eligibility information and notify you of any additional documentation required.

  1. Complete a housing application.

  2. Provide required documentation.

  3. Participate in the eligibility review process.

  4. Complete any required interviews or verification requests.

  5. Be placed on the waiting list if a unit is not immediately available.

  6. Receive notification when a unit becomes available and all eligibility requirements have been met.

Applications are accepted in accordance with HUD regulations and Girard Housing Authority policies.

Water Street Apartments consists of 24 one-bedroom units serving eligible elderly and disabled households.

When all units are occupied, qualified applicants may be placed on a waiting list until housing becomes available.

Applicants are encouraged to keep their contact information current while on the waiting list to ensure timely communication regarding housing opportunities.
